My upbringing is very Irish-Catholic and I wasn’t raised to think that, you know, being gay was wrong- for other people. But you know, it was definitely like, you know, I remember Jesus was my imaginary friend, you know? …It was difficult for to kind of have that foundation of who you are be ripped out from under you because of your sexuality and understanding who you are.

I spent a lot of time praying that God would change me… but there was a day where I got tired of that prayer and started to feel really selfish, like there’s a lot of things that God can be working on rather than just changing this. So I started to pray to accept myself for who I was. And that changed my whole life.

For a long time I felt it would hinder my acting if I focused on anything else, but I found myself wanting to broaden my horizons… There comes a point when you have to be more than an actor, and doing something else that means a lot to me has actually made me a stronger actor. It’s stimulated something else in my brain and heart.
